Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield Doesn’t Understand College Football AP Poll

Sue Ogrock - Associated Press

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield remembers the night the Sooners defeated The Ohio State at the Shoe in Columbus earlier this year. He just wishes the AP voters gave the 31-17 prime time, nationally televised victory over the Big Ten power more weight in their voting.

“There’s got to be a head-to-head match up,” Mayfield said. “You’ve got to have some sense to count that. You talk about head-to-head. They beat Penn State and both of them are ranked higher than us. I don’t understand it.”

Oklahoma (7-1) is ranked eighth in this week’s Top 25. Ohio State (7-1) jumped from 6 to 3 after defeating Penn State, 39-38, in Columbus last weekend. Penn State 7-1 dropped from 2 to 7. The Sooners’ lone loss was a 38-31 defeat against an undervalued Iowa State on the road, The Cyclones followed up that win by defeating previously undefeated TCU, who had been ranked 4 prior to the game, 14-7 last weekend in Ames. The two wins over Top 25 teams pushed Iowa State to 14 in the writers’ poll.
